1. The comedian’s jokes brought down the house. The audience wouldn’t stop laughing.

2. You’ve already spent a lot of money fixing your old car. Spending more is just money down the drain.

3. If you play loud music late at night, you’ll drive your neighbors up the wall. (to drive someone up the wall)

4. You should take any job in that company, just to get your foot in the door. Then you can work your way up to a better job. (to get one’s foot in the door)

5. The problems of the economy really hit home when I lost my job.

6. Humphrey hit the ceiling when he realized his car had been stolen again.

7. I’m on the fence bout whether I should continue school or get a full-time job.

8. At our local restaurant, customers get dessert on the house if they order a meal.

9. Some people feel on the shelf after they retire and no longer work. They don’t feel needed anymore.

10. We have to take steps to repair the roof before it rains again.

11. It’s against the law to take money under the table to vote for someone.
