改变世界和知天命

人生有不同的阶段，不同阶段有不同的追求和要求。这一点孔老夫子最觉悟，他的总结无人超越：三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲不逾矩。
励志是中青年的主旋律，那个时期，成家要担当，立业有责任，只能一路向上冲。人过中年，就该过度到知天命的阶段了。
我的一位老友印象中永远都是积极向上，从来没见他回头喘息。咱们在吭哧吭哧读博士的时候，他就提前把学位拿了，四年不到 ，拿了两个洋硕士（其中一个是死硬难啃的骨头统计硕士）和一个博士学位。等同龄人苦熬博士后或者在职场拼命寻找第一份工作时候，他已经提前拿到甜妞（终身教职）升了副教授。紧接着是提前拿到正教授，担任系主任。再往后，好几个学校请他去做 Dean，他没去，在学校和公司之间奔忙，自得其乐。
最近，他突然说：
不是不奋斗，而是知天命。与我心有戚戚焉。
最近，他突然说：

I could continue the fight. But my plan is to become more relaxed. In 2005, I was a final candidate for a Dean's position at .... Its Provost told me that I could make history by joining him. If I stayed at ..., I can only make differences. Now my question is: why would I make any of the impact? Why can't I be an environmentalist and make no impact to anyone? We will all leave this world eventually. There is no point struggling for something I no longer care.
