"I can categorically say I hate impact factors!" Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie

unfortunately various institutions, whether they were tenure committees deciding on advancement of faculty to tenure or it was people hiring people for jobs, started looking at these as a measurement of the importance of the paper as opposed to what was actually in the paper. so several people got together, it was started by the American Society for cell biology and had this declaration last year called Dora the Declaration of research assess on research assessment which basically says this is not the way to judge things. I personally I went and visited two different scientific institutions in Europe and talked to the heads of it and both of them did the same thing at the beginning. they said we had X number of papers in journals that had impact factor of such a number. not single one of them said to me we discovered this then we found this and we're really excited about this which is leading to this whole new area for us. they never told me anything about the science. they only told me the numbers because that's the that was the easy thing so we've used these impact factor numbers as a way to judge people and I think it's horrible.

Impact factors are "a substitute for judgement" - Nobel Laureate Michael Brown

if you know for some reason some editor hasn't accepted their paper for nature they think they're a failure, and that's just a terrible um you know a terrible aspect of science. the idea that it has to be a cell paper or a nature paper that is a substitute for judgment, in other words the people that are in charge of recruiting, if you substitute some editor's judgment for your own, you should read. if even if the paper is in you know Archives of Biochemistry or something, you know you should read it and make your own, up your own mind, as to whether this person is was really you know doing good science

to spend on journals shouldn't you get

the journal that more people read not
