Proton therapy is an advance approach to cancer treatment. It is distinguished by its utilization of the Bragg peak—a phenomenon where protons and heavy ions expel most of their energy at the end of their travel in matter. This mechanism ensures treatment of targeted tumors with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. Most proton therapy utilized accelerators like cyclotrons, which generated excessive radiation and radioactivation. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Shanghai research team introduced the synchrotron-based facility. This solution is designed to deliver the required beam energy directly.
