We biophysics group will have a seminar every Monday. One way to help everybody to keep informed in latest journal papers is to assign each of us to read one journal, and give only a 5 min. talk about what you discover. The important ones can lead to a more detailed journal club, or even invite the author to come to give a speech. This is called Journal scan in my group.
It is told that Landau never read any physics papers in his late years. However, he learnt all important news from his famous Landau seminar (quite like Journal scan). Each student will be assigned to read certain journals carefully and gave a talk. Then Landau could quickly absorb the idea and made some comments. Maybe this way of cooperative Journal scanning is one of win-win deal for everybody. 1 + 1 > 2
