Transposable elements

期刊:BMC Genomics

客座编辑:Gökhan Karakülah & Marie-Anne Van Sluys

7a845eef49d2d118fa35d6a007914312.jpg

High-throughput sequencing, especially long-read sequencing, has demonstrated the prevalence of transposable elements in the eukaryotic genome. Transposons have the potential for deleterious effects, for example through introducing genomic instability, but also provide a route for genetic and epigenetic variability, probably playing a key role in adaptive evolution.

This Guest Edited Collection in BMC Genomics brings together this broad field to highlight the ubiquity and potential utility of these elements. We welcome submissions covering technology and software, evolutionary biology, application of transposons as genetic tools, mechanisms, embryonic development and disease. We bring all eukaryotes from unicellular organisms to multicellular plants and humans.

Effects of Soil Management on Plant Physiology of Horticultural Crops

期刊:CABI Agriculture & Bioscience

客座编辑:Alba Mininni

d3536ba97a49c0dd5410e7197e24b6f8.jpg

This special collection is focused on the effect of soil management on plant physiology, in order to define the best agricultural practices in fruit orchards aimed to improve soil fertility and fruit quality, optimizing/increasing the efficiency of the main environmental resources (water, soil, nutrients etc.) in the frame of precision agriculture.

The proposed collection aims to provide state-of-art knowledge on the innovative agricultural practices involved at improving soil physical-chemical characteristics, soil hydrological properties, soil-nutrients content and the related effects on the main plant growth parameters also through sensoring, remote and proximal monitoring systems of soil and plant status. Studies on the effect of soil management on plant physiology and fruit physiopathies will be considered. The impact of soil management on improving efficiency and quality of horticultural/fruit growing sector, will be considered, as well as the impact of innovative fruit orchard-management strategies on improving the ecosystem services delivered by the agricultural production systems.

New Genetic Technologies in Crop Improvement

期刊:CABI Agriculture & Bioscience

客座编辑:Nigel Halford

d3536ba97a49c0dd5410e7197e24b6f8.jpg

Recent years have seen the rapid development of new genetic technologies, such as CRISPR, TALENS and ODM (collectively gene editing), as well as doubled haploids and mapping populations. Together with the rapidly expanding availability of genome sequence data these technologies have the potential to transform plant breeding. This collection will include papers that describe the application of these technologies to crop improvement, and we will work to attract papers addressing targets from developing as well as developed countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic and intimate partner violence

期刊:BMC Public Health

客座编辑:Jhumka Gupta, Lindsay Stark, Tiara Willie & Paul Bukuluki

According to recent global estimates, 1 in 3 women experience lifetime physical and/or sexual violence (hereafter, IPV) from a male partner. IPV is a critical global human rights, security, and public health concern. Similar to other global crisis situations (e.g. armed conflict, natural disasters), the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted progress towards gender equity, including exacerbating vulnerability to IPV. In recognition of the 66th session on the Commission on the Status of Women, and the upcoming 2 year anniversary of WHO’s declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Achieve gender equality) and 16 (Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels), BMC Public Health has launched a special collection on COVID-19 and IPV.

We welcome submissions from all geographic regions. We also welcome a range of appropriate methodological approaches including quantitative, qualitative, and systematic reviews.

Symbiotic relationships in plants

期刊:Scientific Reports

客座编辑:Raffaella Balestrini, Nijat Imin & Sudisha Jogaiah

1b2936737bdbc6a0619120a2f31bd647.jpg

Most plants will form some kind of symbiotic relationship, with fungi, bacteria, and even insects – an example of the latter being patrolling ants housed in specialist organs. Some of these relationships (as with the ants) afford plants increased protection versus herbivores, whilst others help plants tolerate stressful environments; both invaluable, given the impact of climate change on our environment, and the need to feed an increasing population. However, symbionts can also provide significant nutritional benefits, most notably, nitrogen-fixing bacteria housed in the root nodules of specific plants. Understanding what underlies this compatibility could reduce the need for nitrogen fertilisers.

This Collection invites original research on plants and their symbionts, from the mechanisms of these association, to how these relationships may contribute towards sustainable agriculture.

Zoonotic Diseases

期刊:Scientific Reports

客座编辑:Neil A. Mabbott, Stephan Pleschka & Zheng Xing

1b2936737bdbc6a0619120a2f31bd647.jpg

Zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, are various kinds of illnesses caused by pathogens that jumped from non-human animals to humans. Zoonoses can be highly infectious and deadly, representing a serious public health problem around the world, disrupting individual well-being and societies as a whole. They may become even more of a threat under future climate scenarios and if habitat loss is not halted, increasing the chances of contact between humans and wildlife.

This Collection welcomes studies providing the latest insights on zoonotic disease emergence and spread, pathogen life cycles, development of new treatments and vaccines, preventive healthcare, and many other aspects from a variety of fields.
