Chevron Corp. received the fifth permit to drill in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, regulators said Thursday.The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement approved the revised permit to drill in 6,700 feet of water 200 miles off the Louisiana coast.Initial drilling on the well started in March 2010, but was suspended that June due to the drilling moratorium enacted following the April 20 Deepwater Horizon disaster.San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron (NYSE: CVX) is a member of the Houston-based Marine Well Containment Co. set up to respond to any well control issue. Regulators are monitoring this ability to respond to a potential disaster before any post-moratorium permit applications are approved.Houston based Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL), Australia-based BHP Billiton, Houston-based ATP Oil & Gas Corp. (NASDAQ: ATPG) and Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corp.
