英文写作中的一些常用缩写

阅读英文文献，经常会遇到e.g., etc., et al., i.e., viz.，它们都是拉丁文的缩写，但在现代科技文献中仍广为使用。这是因为任何语言和文化都有惯性。

e.g. 是英文中比较常见的拉丁文缩写, 它是exempli gratia的缩写, 意思是"for example"（举例）为了方便记忆，你可把"e.g." 与 "example given" 联想起来。

例句1: Buy some vegetables, e.g., carrots.

i.e. 是id est的缩写，意思是"that is"（即）

例句2: There are three meals in the day (i.e., breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

etc. 是et cetera (“and so forth; and the others; and other things; and the rest; and so on": 等等)的缩写。它放在列表的最后，表示前面的例子还没列举完，最后加个词“等等”。

例句3: I need to go to the store and buy some pie, milk, cheese, etc.

et al. 是et alia（"and others; and co-workers": 等它人）的缩写。它几乎都是在列文献作者时使用，即把主要作者列出后，其它作者全放在et al. 里面。

例句4: These results agree with the ones published by Pelon et al. (2002).

人的场合用et al，而无生命的场合用etc.(et cetera)。

et后不要加“.”,因为et不是缩写。另外，与etc.不同，et al.的前面不要逗号

viz. 是videlicet（ "namely", "towit", "precisely", "that is to say"：即）的缩写，与e.g.不同，viz位于同位列表之前，要把它前面单词所包含的项目全部列出。

例句5: Each symbol represents one of the four elements, viz. earth, air, fire, and water.

Cannot 是can 和not的合并写法，正式写作中常用have not, did not, 不写成它们的缩写形式。

On the one hand 和on the other hand不表示递进，表示两个相反的方面，是转折关系。

简单地说，“it’s”是“it is”的缩写。在更非正式的用法中，it’s还是it has的缩写，比如说到一件包装得很好的礼物：“It’s got a lot of ribbon tied around it.”（“上面系了很多丝带”）。应该避免在正式的论文中使用缩写，所以如果你在论文中写了“it’s”，应把它改成更正式的形式“it is”。

当使用its时，用的是这个词的所有格形式，例如“The dog walked around in a circle three times before settling down on its bed.”：（“这条狗走了三圈之后才坐到它的床上”）。its的所有格形式不需要撇号。
