学术头衔通常的阶梯和结构

• Distinguished, Endowed or University Professor杰出(贡献)或大学教授，属于一种荣誉，一般tenured professor才可以获得提名

• Professor教授，tenured终身，terminal degree拥有本专业的最终学位，比如博士学位PhD，专业艺术硕士MFA等,MLIS图书馆学专业硕士等。*博主注解：MFA美国艺术表演绘画艺术等类似艺术专业的最高学位。MLIS图书馆员的最高学位。有些学校图书馆员给教授头衔。

• Associate Professor副教授，tenure track常任轨或tenured终身， terminal degree拥有本专业的最终学位，比如博士学位PhD，专业艺术硕士MFA等,MLIS图书馆学专业硕士等

• Assistant Professor助理教授，tenure track常任轨4-6年， terminal degree拥有本专业的最终学位，比如博士学位PhD，专业艺术硕士MFA等,MLIS图书馆学专业硕士等

• Research Associate, Lecturer, and Instructor研究助理，讲师和讲课老师，terminal degree is not required, Ph. D in other displines, master degree in the area and related areas required.专业最终学位不是强制要求，可以是其他专业的博士学位，一般至少有本专业硕士或相关学科的硕士学位。

• Adjunct Professor/Lecturer/Instructor (often part-time)兼职教授/讲师/讲课老师（通常非全职，属于兼职）比照全职各个阶梯

• 其他比如visiting professor, An individual hired with a college or university to teach for a limited time is sometimes referred to as a "Visiting Professor" or "Visiting Lecturer"访问教授被请来教很有限的时间比如一年。

• Clinical Professor/Practical Professor A clinical professor engages in practical instruction (of professional students) typically with an emphasis on practical skills as opposed to theory实践为主不搞理论的教授。一般是医学，法律，心理学，商学教授。通常不是常任轨。

• Research Professor/Research scientist研究教授/研究员/科学家

A professor who does not take on all of the classic duties of a professor, but instead focuses on research.
顾名思义，只做研究，不教课，有些学校叫scientist或者research scientist通常不是常任轨。

• professor by courtesy/affilicated professor特邀教授

A professor who is primarily and originally associated with one academic department, but has become officially associated with a second department, institute, or program within the university and has assumed a professor's duty in that second department as well, could be called a "professor by courtesy." 类似国内的双聘院士或特邀海外教授

• honorary professor荣誉教授emeritus professor退休教授

• librarian图书馆员，rank比照教授。薪水比教授略低。有的学校分三级assistant librarian, associate librarian, librarian.有的学校分4级，LIB-1，2，3，4.有的五级LIB -1，2，3，4，5.有的学校给faculty status， tenure track 或tenure，有的faculty status , non tenure track有的给professional status，  tenure track & tenure，有的给academic staff status总之不一而论。

行政管理头衔

• Board of Trustees董事会，最高决策机构，负责聘请解雇校长，做重大决定。tenure track以上教授名义上属于董事会聘用。

• President/Chancellor校长，向董事会汇报。

• Provost国内翻译教务长，其实是负责学术的常务副校长，仅次于校长。统管各个学院，图书馆，研究部门等。向校长汇报

• Vice President副校长，向校长汇报。

• Assistant/Associate Vice-President/Vice-Chancellor/Provost。助理/副（学术）校长，协助provost或vice president分管某一方面，有些图书馆长给这个头衔。

• Dean 学院院长, 有些图书馆馆长给dean的头衔，直接向provost汇报

• Assistant/associate dean助理/副院长

• University Librarian图书馆馆长，加大学的头衔，直接向provost汇报。

• Director 处长，项目主任，部门主任，有些图书馆馆长用director头衔。向学术校长，或主管副校长，分管助理副校长/助理学术校长汇报。

• Chair/Head 系主任，部门主任，委员会主席。向dean汇报。美国大学一般没有系副主任职位。简化管理吧。

没有列出全部管理职位和学术职位，主要的都在这里了。

• 还有一些staff position比如administrative assistant行政助理，technician 技术人员等等没有列出。
