I finished editing a new client's manuscript two days ago, but my brain won't quit thinking about it. Why? This is because this paper presents an interesting feature based on solid data. However, I felt one important conclusion was drawn without careful consideration. So, I debated: to speak out, or not.
I initially intended to provide "scientific editing," meaning that I would help to improve a manuscript's scientific merit. That turned out to be impossible, partly because I edit many papers that are beyond my training (as an ocean modeler). So, I switched to offering "English editing," meaning that I will fix the language (even if the content may be wrong).
Well, once in a blue moon, a paper may impress me so much so that I start to think about it even after I have finished editing. It's risky to raise my concern over a paper that is beyond my expertise, but sometimes taking a risk has its advantages, too...
At least in this case, my concern was well received by the client, which made me very happy. I wish I could edit more papers that interest me...
