When I decided to move to Hawaii more than 10 years ago, a good friend told me about "Island Fever." DWM used to live in Hawaii, and loved the paradise. However, his wife didn't care for the climate here, so they moved to Seattle.
I moved to Hawaii because of ... a job, and I wanted to make sure that we didn't get "Island Fever." So, as soon as we settled down in summer, I booked a trip to the mainland US for Christmas.
It was a good trip to see many friends, but it was tooooooooooooo cold. By the time we saw the paradise below our wings, we felt so lucky that we live in Hawaii.
So, a good cure (or prevention) for Island Fever is to take a trip in a hot summer or a cold winter right after you move here. Then, you will never want to leave again. (Ok, a young boy also needs a playmate. As soon as he gets invited to dinner at a friend's house, he will be fine.)
