I wanted to tell a young lady that maybe she is not in love with this guy, yet. I wanted to explain what "falling in love" is, but then thought the answer might be on the Net. So, I googled...
Here is what wikipedia says:
In romantic relationships, falling in love is mainly a Western concept of moving from a feeling of neutrality towards a person to one of love.
The use of the term "fall" implies that the process is in some way
inevitable, uncontrollable, risky, irreversible, and that it puts the
lover in a state of vulnerability,
in the same way the word "fall" is used in the phrase "to fall ill" or
"to fall into a trap". The term is generally used to describe an
(eventual) love that is strong.
I have to say that wikipedia is pretty good at many things. It also taught me how to write English, as in the case of "an (eventual) love that is strong." See, if I use my analytical mind, I would have trouble deciding to use "an" or "a" in front of a parenthetic remark. Thank you, wikipedia. (However, I also find two questionable usages. Can you?)
Oh, by the way, I did fall in love myself, more than once. When you fall in love, your other half is perfect, no matter how plain looking he may be, no matter how poor he is, and no matter how much older he is (but I would not go for 28 vs. 82 unless I experienced it myself). Fair enough?
