Yes, in Macy's case, it counted for $25 (late fee dismiss). I was away for too long and missed a payment by one day. It's my fault, and I expected a penalty. The new bill came in today, and I felt I should at least give them a call. (Normally, I hate to call 1-800 numbers because I don't like to talk to a robot.) For $25, I thought I should waste a few minutes with the robot. (Hey, it's a Saturday!)
I played a little hide-and-seek with the robot, and discovered the magic word "agent." A gentleman's voice came out, friendly and with a heavy Indian accent. I said I had been a good customer, paying bills on time, except this time...He immediately said: "Oh, you are our loyal customer, and I will remove the charge for you." We wished each other a pleasant day, and hang up.
So, next time when you get a late fee charge, don't get upset. If you can afford a few minutes with the robot, pick up the phone and call. (Of course, you should always keep a clean history of paying bills on time.)
The same can be said about getting a pink slip. When loyalty is under assault, just smile and walk away. Who knows, your next boss may not be smarter but you can always hope for a nicer and better-looking fellow.
