When I lectured at Xiamen University last Friday, I talked about semi-colon.
Here is another example:
In winter, the South China Sea is dominated by strong northeast monsoon; in summer, the wind becomes southwesterly.
Sure, you can use period in this case instead of the semi-colon. But, it's better to use the semi-colon since the two sentences are short and closely related.
