A ghost inside the Word file?

I am not sure this ever happened before. I turned the tracking on, and started to edit a manuscript. A few edits later, most of my editing was messed up: some deleted words reappeared, and some stayed.
I cut and paste the whole paper into the new file. It didn't help.
What is going on?
