龙应台的《親愛的安德烈》was based on English "conversations" between her and her older son, which she then translated into Chinese.

I am almost sure what her son wrote was "Life is short."

I could not enjoy the beauty of English when I first came to the US. I remember hearing "I love you" on TV, and thought what a simplistic expression that was.
