   马俊仁当年用的是血红细胞生成素，英文名Erythropoietin （EPO），这是肾脏产生的单链糖蛋白生长因子，促进骨髓里血红细胞的生成，从而增加血液的提氧能力，增强运动体能。

       EPO作为兴奋剂，在九十年代被大规模的滥用于竞技体育，包括自行车，拳击，赛马，拳击，划船，长跑，竞走，雪鞋，越野滑雪，冬季两项，混合武术和铁人三项，等等，被滥用的原因主要是当时因为没有有效的检测方法。直到2000年，法国的反兴奋剂中心研制出检测药用EPO的方法，并得到世界反兴奋剂机构的大力支持，之后EPO违规案例不断被发现。
