利兰·哈特韦尔,生于1939年,在美国西雅图的弗雷德·哈钦森癌症研究中心工作,他因为发现了控制细胞周期的一类特异基因而受奖。其中一个叫“启动器”(start)的基因对控制每个细胞周期的初始阶段具有主要作用。哈特韦尔还引入了一个概念“检验点”对于理解细胞周期很有帮助。荣获2001年诺贝尔生理学及医学奖。
