Dream Cities: Seven Urban Ideas That Shape the World(http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1557-997875.html),我顺便找来看了一眼,正好看到城堡的一章。作者先引用了JacksonLears的一句话:一切历史都是欲望的历史(all history is the history of longing)——这是Jackson在《国家的重生》(Rebirth of a Nation: The Making of Modern America, 1877-1920)引言的第一句话,因为国家的一切都可追根到人的欲望(all can be ultimately traced to the viscera of human desire)。
Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand:
Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!
没读过M的作品,不知为何写这样的句子;原诗是她系列小诗Figs fromThistles中的一首,而这个诗题出自马太福音:“Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?”(Matthew 7:16),“蒺藜里岂能摘无花果呢?”
他住在洛杉矶北150km的Santa Barbara(SB),那儿令人有时空隔离之感(separation in space and time),一来远离了大城市的喧嚣,把雾霾和拥堵留给了别人(others not fortunate enough to live here),二来是小城建筑令人仿佛穿越到了更美的世界(psychological achievement of a sense of time travel to a better world)。 难怪历来的土豪(nouveauxriches)都喜欢投资古堡,让城堡的古朴洗净他们的铜臭味儿(washing that bad, arriviste smell out of their wealth)。
