刚买了一套《狄金森全集》（上海译文版），准确说是诗歌全集（三卷）加书信选集（一卷）——现在喜欢叫全集，很多书明明是选本，编者自己也说是选本，封面偏叫全集，“全”是被淹了还是被阉了？

看最后一首，F.1676——Emily的诗都没有标题，只有编者根据时间赋予的序号。F.xx是R. W. Franklin版The Poems of Emily Dickinson的编号。译本以Thomas H. Johnson的集注本（1955，如今难寻了）为基础，编号为J.xx，不过恰好没有这首诗。F版也有三卷集注本（variorum edition, 1998），但译本只参考了Franklin的阅读版（reading edition）。F.1676只有两行：

一种磨练过的典雅是双倍的典雅—

不，那是一种神的风采。

  据F的注释，这两句出自Dickinson在1885年5月1日给Sarah Tuckerman的信（中译本未选）；信的全文如下：

Wetrust the repairs of the little friend are progressing swiftly, though shall welove her as well revamped? Anatomical dishabille is sweet to those who prize us -- Achastened Grace is twice a Grace. Nay, 'tis a Holiness. With a sweet May Day,

那会儿，Sarah的侄女Alice踝关节扭伤了，要拄拐杖。Anatomical dishabille一句不太明白。最后两句是D安慰和鼓励小朋友：小淑女经过磨难好，会变成女神。grace与holiness是有宗教味儿的词儿，圣经里俯拾即是，如“find grace inone's sight (eyes)”；两词并列用的也有，如Principles of grace and holiness are wrought in him, to do, as wellas to will. (Luke 15:24)；Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shallsee the Lord; Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lestany root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.(Hebrews 12:14-15)。

   有人解释，twice是John Wesley的“圣洁运动”（holiness movement）的两个阶段，而Holiness是指通过grace而达到完全的sanctification。
