1966年2月4日,老顽童费曼接受Charles Weiner(1931-2012,MIT科学史家,做物理学家口述历史)访谈,说过一句有趣的绕口令式的话(见Bohr图书馆档案):“我本以为是因自己所知太少而不理解的很多困惑我的事情原来是因为它们本来就没有逻辑没有根据才不能理解的。”
It has turned out that many things that bothered me that I thought that I didn’t understand because I didn’t know enough about the subject, turned out that I didn’t understand them because they weren’t logical, they weren’t valid.
这句话代表了费老一贯的语言自信和物理自信。他说过,他不能理解自己不能创造的东西(what I cannot create I do not understand)。在《物理学定律的特征》里,他还有一句绕口令,说明他是怎么创造(或重塑,put things back together again)什么东西的:
I am never quite sure of where I am supposed to begin or where I am supposed to end. I just remember enough all ofthe time so that as the memory fades and some of the pieces fall out I can putthe thing back together again every day.
最后半句还令人想起王后告诉爱丽丝小妹妹的话:每天早晨早餐时想六种自己都不相信的事情。当然,这两段话更大的现实意义是用来训练英语口语。
