昨天看到Google涂鸦在纪念马克吐温诞辰176周年，去年这会儿好像没见它纪念呢。176是什么特别的数字吗？

想起传说是老马的一句名言：

大多数老百姓的麻烦不在于他们无知，而在于他们知道了太多不是那么回事的事情。

其实，真“不是那么回事”——说这话的不是老马，而是另一个和他同时代幽默作家Josh Billings。不过此话在今天更有意义，因为只是多了，论文多了，选择也多了。如果没想到要选择或者没有选好，我们的脑子一定会装满“太多不是那么回事的事情”。啊，在事实面前，理论多么空洞！（How empty is theory in the presence of fact.——A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court）

在Tom Sawyer Abroad第九章（Tom discourses on the desert），老马还借Huck和Tom的话评说了“理论”：

……the trouble about arguments is, they ain't nothing but theories, after all, and theories don't prove nothing, they only give you a place to rest on, a spell, when you are tuckered out butting around and around trying to find out something there ain't no way TO find out.

……There's another trouble about theories: there's always a hole in them somewheres, sure, if you look close enough.

【这儿的“双重否定”，如ain’t nothing, don’t prove nothing, ain’t no way之类，在今天是语法错误的，只能用一个“no”。】

这段话调侃理论说到了点子上，理论就是一个让大脑暂时休息的地方，和缺月下的疏桐一样。理论也有陷阱，就像黑洞，一个关于黑洞的理论，也是一个关于理论的黑洞。

不过这些话不像小孩儿说的，特别是Tom和他的伙伴儿那样的小孩儿——老马让他的主角不长大，总是15岁，而要让8岁到80岁的读者都喜欢。这本书有点儿失败。

老马还有一个原则：对他投的稿子，任何编辑都可以删除他不喜欢的字眼儿，但即使全能的上帝也不能添加俺老马没用过的词儿！
