A NOVEL SENSOR USING TOOL COATING AND ITS SUBSTRATE AS THERMOCOUPLE TO MEASURE CUTTING TEMPERATURES
Zhang Shijun and Liu Zhanqiang
ABSTRACT: The ability to monitor in real time, the thermal impact of sensors on cutting tools has been very appealing to the manufacturing industries. Several methods have been used to obtain tool-chip/workpiece contact temperature. However, special sensors to monitor coated tool temperatures are far and few-in-between. In this paper, the sequence of fabricating a novel coating-substrate thermocouple and calibration setups to measure cutting temperature was proposed. The cutting experiments were carried out under different cutting conditions for 1045 steel. The experimental results showed that this novel technology for measuring cutting temperature is valid in manufacturing processes with coated cutting tools.
