英国工程院院士Richard Jardine教授

应邀，英国皇家工程院院士Richard Jardine教授，在上周一到周五，访问了香港大学土木工程系。Jardine院士现任帝国理工大学土木与环境工程系的岩土力学教授，副系主任（下图）。

Jardine院士在4月26日晚上，在香港大学做了一场公众学术报告（上图）。报告题目是“Shear Strength and Stiffness Anisotropyof Geologically Aged Stiff Clays”。他在报告中指出，英国南部大部分区域土地都富沉积有三叠纪到始新世的坚硬粘土和泥岩。英国高速铁路等建设工程必将遇到它们。过去隧道工程经验表明，这些坚硬老粘土可以突然发生破坏。因此，Jardine院士研究团队利用先进的土力学实验仪器，对英国四个地区的老粘土进行了土力学强度和变形模量的测量。定量地研究了它们的横观各项同性的力学强度和变形模量。他指出，这些老粘土也含有有机质，有的老粘土如同页岩还可以燃烧。

在4月27日下午，Jardine院士认真听取了，我们土木工程系岩土专业七位研究生的博士或硕士论文研究工作的口头汇报。在每位研究生汇报后，他都给与了具体的疑问、评论或指导。这让我们研究生同学受益良多（下图）。

在这段访问期间，Jardine院士同我们土木工程系岩土和结构专业教员，就各自的论文研究成果，进行了深入探讨和交流。特别地，他对我在2014年发表于Acta Mechanica（225(4)，1447-1469）的高压天然气导致地震论文进行了审阅，给与了高度评价。这篇论文题目是“On cause hypotheses of earthquakes with external tectonic plate and/or internal dense gas loadings”。DOI 10.1007/s00707-013-1072-2。

Richard Jardine is Professor of Geomechanics and Deputy Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, where he joined the academic staff in 1984 and progressed to serve as Dean/College Consul for Engineering between 2012 and 2015. His research covers offshore geotechnics, soil characterisation, field instrumentation, soft ground engineering, geohazards and recently, climate change impact on permafrost. His current international work includes experimental studies of pile ageing and cyclic loading with INP Grenoble, UWA Australia and Zhejiang (China), the PISA pile lateral loading JIP, another JIP into offshore foundations in chalk and research with Deltares (Holland) into Flood Defences on peat. He has published over 240 papers and sits on six International Committees, including ISSMGETC-101 – the group concerned with advanced laboratory experimentation, which he chaired from 2001-2009 and TC-209 on offshore geotechnics. Recent keynotes have covered micro-mechanical behaviour (IS-Shanghai 2010), deep foundations (Mong Lecture, Hong Kong 2011), Offshore Geotechnics (London 2012) and Advanced Soil behaviour (Zeng Lecture China 2008, Tunisia 2012, Buenos Aires 2015 etc), the Bishop Honour Lecture (Paris ISSMGE September 2013) and the ASCE Sowers Lecture in Atlanta (May 2014). He gave in 2016 the BGA’s Rankine Lecture as well as the Milligan and Wissa lectures in Canada and the USA. He has recently returned from giving his Rankine Lecture to audiences in Australian and New Zealandcities. Richard is a Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow (from 2002) and has won 17 National and International research prizes. He has been a visiting Professor in Singapore, Japan and is a Chinese MoE Overseas Distinguished Professor. He has consulted on many major International and UK onshore and offshore engineering projects.
