  比利时是位于西欧的一个小国，其国土面积仅有30500多平方公里，但人口稠密，约有1100万居民。比利时在20世纪欧洲古植物学发展史上占有一席之地。比利时古植物学研究的先驱人物是Armand Renier (1876--1951)。

       1876年，Armand Renier 出生于比利时列日省的Verviers ( Province of Liège, Belgium)。他曾就读于Verviers耶稣学院(Jesuit College of Verviers)。但受比利时地层学家及矿业工程师Maximin Marie Joseph Lohest (1857--1926)的影响，Armand Renier到列日大学(University of Liège)学习矿业工程，1902年毕业。

       20世纪初年，Armand Renier在比利时多个矿区工作。大约1908年，他回母校列日大学讲授矿业课程。1912年，开始在列日大学讲授古生物学。同年，比利时著名地质古生物学家Michel-Félix Mourlon (1845--1915) 退休，Armand Renier被任命为比利时地质调查局局长。

       Armand Renier主要研究地层学、煤田地质学及成煤植物等，在比利时发现了煤核(coal balls)。他著述很多,代表性著作有《比利时煤田地层学》(Stratigraphic Coalfield of Belgium)、《比利时煤田植物群和动物群》(Flora and Fauna coal Mines of Belgium)。后者由Armand Renier和Jean émile Charles Timmermans (1882--1971)合著。      

    1927年，Armand Renier当选为比利时科学人文及艺术科学院通讯院士(Corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts)。1942年退休。

--1876:  Armand Renier was born in Verviers on June 26,1876.

--1910:  Married Marguerite Jacques;

--1912:  Resumed the service of mining administration, but continued to teach palaeontology at the University of Liège;

--1912: Appointed as director of the Geological Survey of Belgium while Michel-Félix Mourlon (1845--1915)  got retired in 1912;

--1927: Elected to the Corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium;

--1931: Appointed as honorary professor of the Universityof Liège;

--1942: Armand Renier got retired;
--Elected to foreign corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences;

--Received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lille, France;

--1951: Died at Leuze on October 9, 1951.
