       20世纪上半叶的法国经历了两次世界大战。法国杰出的古植物学家Paul Charles édouard Bertrand (1879--1944)正是在这样的历史大背景下开展了他的科学研究。Paul Bertrand是法兰西科学院院士、著名古植物学家 Charles Eugène Bertrand  (1851—1917)的儿子。根据父亲的建议，Paul Bertrand将研究方向由现代苏铁转向化石蕨类。

      1909年，Paul Bertrand在其父亲供职的里尔大学(University of Lille)获得博士学位，论文300多页，题目是“Etudes sur la fronde des Zygoptéridées”。1910年，Paul Bertrand担任里尔大学的古生物学讲师。

      在第一次世界大战期间，Paul Bertrand参战。1919年，成为里尔大学的教授。1927年，Paul Bertrand荣任里尔大学古植物学首席教授( chair of palaeobotany)。

      1938年，Paul Bertrand赴巴黎荣任法国国家自然历史博物馆的现代植物和化石植物解剖学首席教授(chair of "Anatomie comparée des végétaux actuels et fossiles")。这一学术职位曾是古植物学之父Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart (1801--1876) 和著名植物学家Phillipe Van Tieghem(1839--1914)的“宝座”。

      1939年，第二次世界大战爆发。法国全面遭受重创。Paul Bertrand晚年的生活和工作是很困难的。由于战争等原因，Paul Bertrand和法兰西科学院无缘。

       Paul Bertrand一生的科学研究主要是现代植物和化石植物的比较形态解剖学研究和石炭纪生物地层学研究。Paul Bertrand著述很多，有120多篇论文。

Paul Charles édouard Bertrand (1879--1944)

--1879: Born in Loos-lez-Lille, Nord, France;His father is a French palaeobotanist, Charles Eugène Bertrand  (1851—1917), and his mother is Marie Hugonin (1849--1943);

--Studied at the University of Lille in northern France;

--1903: Received his Bachelor degree in natural sciences;

--1903—1905: An assistant in the chemistry lab of Lille University;

--1906: Appointed prèparateur at the Coal Museum of Lille;

--1909: Received his doctorate of sciences;

--1910: Became a lecturer in paleontology and director of the Lille "coal museum";

--1914—1915 (August 1914—October 1915): Acted as a military corpsman;

--1915-1917 (November1915—April 1917): Worked as professor of natural history at the High School ofNantes (western France);

--1919: Promoted to full professor of Lille University;

--1926: Married Zènobie Fenaux (1892--1928), who was a teacher of literature at Lille’s grammar school;

--1927--1944: Promoted to the chair of paleobotany within the Institute of Geology, Lille University;

--1929: Married Cècile Touron (1885--1975);

--1938--1944: Served as chair of "Anatomie comparée des végétaux actuels et fossiles" at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris;

--1944: Passed away in Paris at age of 65.
