   一般认为，罗马帝国(Roman Empire)建立于公元前27年。在此后的大约200年里，罗马帝国呈现了史无前例的社会稳定和经济繁荣之景象，史称“Pax Romana”或“Roman Peace”(罗马帝国的太平盛世)。

   虽然古罗马人曾经幸逢太平盛世，但是他们对古希腊人所奠定的植物学所做出的基础理论性的新贡献甚微之至。这是一个很大的问题。不过，古罗马人在农业和药用植物学等方面开展了应用性工作。

   Gaius Plinius Secundus(c.A.D.23—A.D.79)是罗马帝国早期的一位重要博物学家，也称“ Pliny the Elder”。他编纂了百科全书式的Naturalis Historia（《自然史》），共37卷。其中，第12卷—第26卷涉及到各种各样的植物。Pliny the Elder时常引用了前人--Theophrastus(c.371 BC -- c.287 BC)的工作。
