美国植物学家Herbert Louis Mason (1896--1994)是著名古植物学家Ralph Works Chaney (钱耐，1890—1971)的学生。1932年，Herbert Louis Mason在加州大学伯克利分校(University of California at Berkeley; UC Berkeley)获得博士学位。之后，他一直供职于该大学植物标本馆（University Herbarium at Berkeley）。1941年，Herbert L. Mason晋升为植物学教授和植物标本馆馆长。1963年退休。

   虽然Herbert L. Mason在其职业生涯主要从事现代植物分类学、地理学和生态学研究，但他的研究工作受到Ralph Works Chaney学术思想的影响。
