学习古植物学需要缘分。20世纪40年代，美国古植物学家Richard A. Scott曾在印地安纳州历史很悠久的文理学院—DePauw University接受本科教育。他先学地质学，后学植物学。Richard A. Scott的植物学老师Truman G. Yuncker教授(1891--1964)建议他读一读密歇根大学（University of Michigan）的古植物学名教授Chester Arthur Arnold (1901--1977)写的教科书--An introduction to paleobotany（《古植物学导论》）。从此，Richard A. Scott和Chester Arthur Arnold教授建立了联系。

   1949年9月，Richard A. Scott辞掉他的工作到密歇根大学跟随Chester Arthur Arnold教授攻读博士学位，1953年毕业。

   1959年，Chester Arthur Arnold担任美国植物学会古植物学分会长（Chairperson），Richard A. Scott担任文献编辑。1964年，Richard A. Scott担任该古植物学分会会长。参见：
