(2)研究兴趣
Dr Hilton’s research has the followingfive foci, but occasionally digresses into other areas including marine faunas, provenance of archaeological materials, and sequence stratigraphic studies:
Seed plantevolution and phylogeny - Thisresearch addresses the origin, early evolution, systematics, evolution andphylogeny of seed plants. Reserch includes information from both living andextinct seed plants. Recent advances include a number of researchinvestigations on the origin of modern conifer families.
Community Change infossil floras - This researcharea includes individual projects that focus on reconstructing terrestrialecosystems though time, and looking at the floral response to environmentalchange. Particular foci include wetland plant communities in the LatePalaeozoic Cathaysian floras (in collaboration with Shi-Jun Wang, IBCASBeijing), changes in species composition and distribution over time, and keyperiods of radiation end extinction in the terrestrial realm in collaborationwith Dr D. Bond (Hull University).
Fossil plants asbiospheric indicators - Thisresearch uses fossil plants as proxies for terrestrial palaeoclimate andpalaeoenvironments, and ranges from studies of Late Palaeozoic gigantopteridplants with Ian Glasspool (Chicago Field Museum), Carboniferous and Permianplant adaptation with Liadan Stevens (Natural History Museum, London), as wellas research on Tertiary fossil plant assemblages with Ming-Mei Liang(Birmingham).
Terrestrialsedimentary facies and environments - This research addresses the sedimentology andsedimentary facies of fossil plant bearing successions and theircorrelation. Research is undertaken in collaboration with Prof. LongyiShao and Dr Jing Lu (China University of Mining and Technology) and Dr J.Wheeley (University of Birmingham) and has recently worked on Permian land:seatransitions in South China and peat forming settings in the Mesozoic of NorthChina.
Fossil plants fromChina - This research investigatesexceptionally well preserved fossil ferns from China and focuses onevolutionary aspects of fossil plant morphology and anatomy, and is largely incollaboration with Prof. Shi-Jun Wang and doctoral researchers inBirmingham.
