A brief chronology of TANG Yao (1905--1998), a pioneer of wood anatomy in China

--1905: Born in Jiang-du county (part of Yangzhou city today), Jiangsu Province, China;

--1927: Graduated from the Department of Botany, Southeast University (东南大学), Nanjing;

--1928—1930: Worked as biology teacher at the Yangzhou High School, Jiangsu Province and greatly influenced his student—WU Zheng-yi (吴征镒, 1916—2013);

--1931—1934: Worked as a wood anatomist at the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology (北平静生生物调查所) in Beijing, which was led by Chinese plant taxonomist HU Hsien-Hu or HU Xiansu (胡先骕, 1894--1968), a pioneer of modern botany in China;

--1935—1938: Studied at the Yale School of Forestry in New Haven (Connecticut, USA) under the guidance of Samuel James Record (1881--1945), who was the founder of International Association of Wood Anatomists (IAWA);

--1938: Completed a doctoral thesis, entitled “Systematic Anatomy of the Woods of the Hamamelidaceae (《金缕梅科木材系统解剖的研究》,” and obtained a Ph.D. degree at Yale University;

--1939: Returned to China when it was at war;

--1939—1949: Founded a Xylarium (木材标本馆) in Bei-Bei of Chongqing city (重庆北碚) in September 1939, which was the first Xylarium in China, but destroyed in June 1940 because of war. Founded another Xylarium in No-san of Sichuan Province (四川乐山) soon and served as director of the Xylarium till 1949;

--1950—1952: Served as director of Southwest Xylarium of the Ministry of Forestry and Land Reclamation of P. R. China (No-san, Sichuan);

--1952: Moved to Beijing in December 1952;

--1953—1959: Worked at the newly-founded Institute of Forestry of the Ministry of Forestry of P. R. China (Beijing);

--1959: Moved to Kunming in the fall of 1959 and joined the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was founded by WU Zheng-yi in April 1959;

--1959—1998: Worked at Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS;

--1998: Died in Kunming, China.

      中国木材解剖学研究开拓者--唐耀先生（1905--1998）于1905年出生于江苏省江都县（今属扬州市）。20世纪20年代中期，唐耀在南京的东南大学生物系求学，跟随植物分类学家胡先骕(1894—1968)等老师学习。1927年，唐耀从东南大学毕业，返回扬州中学任教，影响了他的学生--吴征镒(1916—2013)走上植物分类学道路。

        1931年初，唐耀到北京工作，加盟胡先骕先生主持的北平静生生物调查所，开始木材解剖学研究。

        1935年，唐耀赴美国留学，在耶鲁大学林学院跟随木材解剖学名师Samuel James Record (1881--1945)学习。1938年，唐耀完成博士学位论文，获得博士学位。

        1939年，唐耀返回战火纷飞的中国继续木材解剖学研究。他在四川乐山创建了木材试验室（馆），开展科研和教学工作。该实验室隶属于经济部中央工业实验所。

        1950年，唐耀的木材试验室（馆）更名为“中央林垦部西南木材试验馆”。1953年，唐耀再赴北京工作，供职于新成立的“中央林业部林业科学研究所”。

        1959年4月，吴征镒先生在昆明组建了一个研究所，即：中国科学院昆明植物所。同年秋，唐耀离开北京到昆明植物所工作。

        1981年，唐耀发表《木材科研工作五十年》，对他的求学和研究生涯进行了总结。唐耀先生一生致力于木材解剖学的教学和科研，不畏艰难、不畏曲折，一以贯之，为他所热爱的科学事业做出了杰出贡献。
