∮ 1 Schimper博物家族

        在19世纪德国和法国有一个很著名的“Schimper博物家族”。Karl Friedrich Schimper (1803—1867)和Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper (1804--1878)兄弟俩都是博物学家。他们的堂弟Wilhelm Philippe Schimper (1808--1880)也是博物学家。Wilhelm Philippe Schimper 的儿子Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper (1856--1901)是植物地理学家。Karl Friedrich Schimper 、Wilhelm Philippe Schimper 和Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper分别于1835年、1862年和1892年当选为德国科学院院士(German Academy of Sciences--Leopoldina)。本期《法国古植物学之伞》聚焦植物学家和古植物学家Wilhelm Philippe Schimper院士。

∮ 2 法国植物学家和古植物学家Wilhelm Philippe Schimper (1808--1880)

       1808年初，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper出生于法国东北部的Dossenheim (Alsace, France)。父亲Franz Schimper是一名牧师。

       1826年，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper开始就读于法国东部的Strasbourg大学(Strasbourg University)[注：Strasbourg地处法国和德国的交界处，位于莱茵河畔]。为了顺从父亲的旨意，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper在大学期间学习了神学等科目。不过，他对自然科学拥有浓厚的兴趣。

       1833年，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper以博物学家之助理(assistant naturalist)的身份开始终生供职于Strasbourg自然历史博物馆的地质部(Natural History Museum Strasbourg Natural History Museum)。1839年，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper成为该馆负责人，直到他1880年去世。其间，他于1862—1879年还担任过Strasbourg大学地质学、矿物学和植物学掌门人(Chair or Professorship of Geology, Mineralogy and Botany at the University of Strasbourg)。

       Wilhelm Philippe Schimper的学术贡献主要有两大方面。1836—1855年，他与德国的苔藓植物学家Philipp Bruch (1781--1847) 和Wilhelm Theodor Gümbel (1812--1858)合作，共同出版了史诗般的著作—6卷《欧洲苔藓植物志》(The epic works of six-volume Bryologia europaea)，附有654个图版。

       在古植物学研究领域，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper于1844年与Antoine Mougeot (1815--1889)合作研究了法国东部Vosges地区三叠纪植物化石，发表了一部专著：

      非常有趣的是，Wilhelm Philippe Schimper的

妻子 Adèle Besson (c.1825--??)和儿子Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper (1856--1901)也都是植物学家。

Brief chronology of French botanist and palaeobotanist Wilhelm Philippe Schimper (1808--1880)

--1808: Born in Dossenheim, Alsace, France on 12 January 1808 [Father: Lutheran paster--Franz Schimper];

--1826-1833: Studied philosophy, mathematics and theology at Strasbourg University; received a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1833;

--1833:  Worked as an assistant naturalist in the geological section of the Strasbourg Natural History Museum;

--1836-1855:  Collaborated with German botanists Philipp Bruch (1781--1847) and Wilhelm Theodor Gümbel (1812--1858) and completed the epic works of six-volume Bryologia europaea with 654 plates;

--1839—1880: Served as the curator of geology and paleontology; director of the Strasbourg Natural History Museum

--1844:Collaborated with Antoine Mougeot (1815--1889) and worked on the Triassic floras of the Vosges in Eastern France;

--1845: Received a degree in natural sciences;

--1848: Obtained a doctorate [Recherches anatomiques sur les mousses]

--1849: Married Adèle Besson (botanist);

--1856: Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper (1856--1901) was born in Strasbourg, France;

--1862: Elected to the German Academy of Sciences—Leopoldina;

--1862—1879: Held the Chair or Professorship of Geology, Mineralogy and Botany at the University of Strasbourg;

--1869—1874: Made great compilation of systematic palaeobotany with a total of 2,600 pages in 3 volumes;

--1880: Died in Strasbourg, France on 20 March, 1880.
