∮ 1 Schimper博物家族

        在19世纪德国和法国有一个很著名的“Schimper博物家族”。Karl Friedrich Schimper (1803—1867)和Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper (1804--1878)兄弟俩都是博物学家。他们的堂弟Wilhelm Philippe Schimper (1808--1880)也是博物学家。Wilhelm Philippe Schimper 的儿子Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper (1856--1901)是植物地理学家。Karl Friedrich Schimper 、Wilhelm Philippe Schimper 和Andreas Franz Wilhelm Schimper分别于1835年、1862年和1892年当选为德国科学院院士(German Academy of Sciences--Leopoldina)。本期《德国古植物学之伞》简谈在非洲之角(Horn of Africa)埃塞俄比亚(Ethiopia)—Georg科学探险事业做出重要贡献的Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper “博士”。

∮ 2 德国博物学家Georg WilhelmSchimper (1804--1878)

         1804年，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper出生于德国 Nuremberg。受父母不幸婚姻的影响，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper在少年时代接受很少正规的学校教育。他参过军。1828年退役后，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper曾到哥哥Karl Friedrich Schimper(1803--1867) 任教的慕尼黑大学学习自然科学。

        1831年，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper到法国等地采集植物标本。1832年，他为地质古生物学家Louis Agassiz (1807--1873)当绘图员(draftsman & illustrator)[draftsman—绘制地质图；illustrator—绘画标本等用作插图]。1834年，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper到埃及和阿拉伯半岛进行科学采集。

        1837年，Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper到位于东非的埃塞俄比亚进行科学探险。从此，他在非洲生活40多年，直到1878年去世。Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper在埃塞俄比亚历经艰险。他克服重重困难，为德国、英国、法国等国家的标本馆采集了大量植物标本(包含很多模式标本)。他还采集了埃塞俄比亚的矿物标本（包括古生物化石）。Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper的艰辛采集工作是开拓性的，具有重要科学意义。

--1804: Born in Lauf on the River Pegnitz near Nuremberg inGermany on 2 August, 1804; [Father: Friedrich Ludwig Heinrich Schimper (1771--1823); mother: Margaretha Baroness von Furtenbach (1785--1833)]

--1818: Finished formal education;

--Worked as a woodturner apprenticeship at Nuremberg;

--Joined in army--Badisches Infanterie Regiment;

--1823: Friedrich Ludwig Heinrich Schimper died;

--1828: Left army; joined his elderbrother--Karl Friedrich Schimper (1803--1867) in Munich;

--1831: Left Mannheim, and made his first botanical expedition to the south of France and Algiers;

--1832:Worked as a draftsman and illustrator for Louis Agassiz (1807--1873), a palaeontologist and geologist;

--1834:Made collection expedition to Egypt and Arabian Peninsula;

--1835: Elected to an honorary Member of the Mannheim Society for Natural Sciences (Naturforschende Gesellschaft Mannheim);

--1837: Travelled to Massawa on the Red Sea coast, and then to the city of Adwa in Tigray, Ethiopia (埃塞俄比亚); then settled down in Ethiopia for about 41 years.

--1843: Married Wäyzäro Mersit (c.1823/28--1869);

--1878: Died in Adwa, Ethiopia at age of 74.
