    18世纪后期至19世纪早期德国古生物学家Ernst Freiherr von Schlotheim (1764--1832)系德国化石植物研究的先驱人物之一。他在德国率先采用瑞典伟大学者林奈(Carl von Linné / Carolus Linnæus，1707--1778）的双名法(Binomial nomenclature 或binary nomenclature)。1804年，Ernst Freiherr von Schlotheim发表有关石炭纪植物化石的研究成果。1823年，他当选为德国科学院院士(German Academy of Sciences--Leopoldina)。
