I am glad to have the opportunity to introduce briefly my specialty. My specialty is mechanics, more concretely, general mechanics, or dynamics, vibration and control.
Traditionally, mechanics is the branch of physics that deals with motion and effects of forces on gases, liquids, and solid bodies. In fact, mechanics is the oldest field in physics. The earliest record of the study of mechanical problems was the work of Aristotle. Many later scientists, including Kepler and Galileo, contributed to the development of mechanics, but the formal presentation of the principles of mechanics was made by Sir Isaac Newton.
Mechanics now is also a basic engineering science that lays the foundation for other engineering sciences such as machine design, structural analysis, and stress analysis. Therefore, mechanics is taught for students majoring in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, automobile engineering, aircraft engineering and aerospace engineering.
For ease of study, mechanics has been divided into the study of deformable solid bodies, the study of fluids and gases, and the study of rigid bodies. General mechanics focus on rigid bodies, although it is concerned with deformable solid bodies and liquids sometimes. General mechanics is the foundation of all other branches of mechanics.
General mechanics covers three subdivisions, namely, dynamics, vibration and control. Dynamics is the study of the relation existing between the forces acting on a system and the motion of the system. Dynamics is used to predict the motion caused by given forces or to determine the forces required to produce a given motion. Vibration is the study of the repetitive motion of objects relative to the equilibrium position. Vibration can be regarded as the part of dynamics concerned with the motion of elastic systems. In dynamics and vibration, the emphasis is on analysis, which implies the determination of the response to given excitations. Control is a new approach to system design. The approach consists of designing forces that, when applied to the system, bring about a satisfactory response. Hence general mechanics is significant in applications as well as in theory.
That is all for my introduction to mechanics, especially general mechanics. Thanks for your attention.
