Today, I bought a water-proof coat and a pair of trousers. I wish tomorrow the wind will not be very strong so that I can go to SPRU on my bicycle.

I registered at the University on the second day after I arrived in England. They took a photo of me, and then I was issued with an ID card and an access card and a key to an office for visiting fellows.

Then it was Christmas and New Year’s holiday. I had a good rest and enough time to adapt myself to the new environment. I bought a bicycle, and tried a little bit to cycle according to the rules of England. I already knew by which road I could get to the University.

So it seems I am prepared to work in SPRU, but am I ready to work in SPRU?

A few days ago, a friend wrote to me:

“I found you (with picture) on SPRU's website. Congratulations: you are among a large number of important social scientists. Make sure that you can stay in their (virtual) company. Many (probably even most) of them are much better scientists than I, so you can learn a lot. Take any opportunity to learn.”

 I knew SPRU was the leading institute for innovative studies and scientific policy. I knew all the staff here are famous scientists,economists, mathematicians etc. but I didn’t know how famous they are and what they have done for our society. Just now I heard a story of one of its staff. He died four years ago but his work is continuing through a fund which is supported by some sector producers! What’s an honour it is for an economist!

 I am now among these learned academics, but I don’t know if I can catch up with them. In just one year, can I deserve to share the reputationof this institute?

 The road is not ready yet. Even if I can find the road to the University, even if I prepare myself for all weathers, the road for me to catch up with all those great academics who achieved so much cannot be easily paved.

 Anyway, I have to go no matter how tough the road is: because it is a working day tomorrow.
