I receive emails conerning about apply for my Ph.D students almost every day in the past two months. I have to answer the same questions to different people, which is really time consuming. I hope this message could help to answer your questions and concerns about applying for the Ph.D program in my school and to apply for my Ph.D students.

As you may find from this section, I have some kind of "hopes" for the potential applicants who want to be a Ph.D students. These hopes are as a matter of fact, my requirements.  I HOPE you could understand the real implication of these requirements in a practical sense.

One important point I want to accentuate is the purpose for the training of doctoral students or doing a doctoral degree. There are many misunderstandings or prejudices about doing a doctoral degree, especially in the business field. Ph.D is not for doing business or for practitions, instead, the ultimate goal for the doctoral students is to do scientific research, some kind of activities in the tower of ivory. You don't need a Ph.D if you want to be a businessmen/businesswomen.

Another point is related with the work experiences. The work experiences as a HR professional or in other business field do no good to the scientific research for a doctoral student, nor benefit for the learning process in the program. Doing business and doing research need different types of thinking and knowledge background.

The doctoral students should be good at statistics, empirical thinking, and English (both listening and speaking).

Applicants with bachelors or masters in psychology, sociology, statistics, science, and business administration will be especially welcome.

Previous experiences in doing or joining a research project is a privilege.

All the applicants have to take the entrance examination organized by the Graduate School of RUC and also a comprehensive test (CT) held by myself. The CT consists of two main parts, one about statistics(correlation, linear regression, ANOVA, MANOVA, Factor analysis), one about research methods (interview, questionnaire, experimentatoion, secondary data). The CT takes about three hours.
