Fornew readers and those who request to be “好友 good friends” please read my 公告栏 first.

During my stay inChina/Tsinghua this past September, I gave a hour-long talk at TsinghuaUniversity and NingXia University. People have asked me for a copy of thepowerpoint slides I used. It is my policy not the give out slides due to thefact that without my accompanying voice these slides can often be misused andmisinterpreted. I had several bad past experience when I was not following mypolicy.

However, to get an approximationof my talk I have devised the following method.

I have written down in theNOTES PAGE of each slide approximately what I actually said during the talkwhen the slide was shown. Thus, if you print out the note pages of this PowerPointtalk and then show the slides in presentation mode with animation (use the downarrow to advance the bullets on each slide) while reading the notes pages, youwill get an approximation of my talk.

During the talk I also did alive demonstration of an optimization approach. The detail instruction for thisdemo can be found at http://people.seas.harvard.edu/~ho/DEDS/OO/Demo/Simple.html For your convenience the software mentioned is alsoattached here so you don’t actually have to implement the spread sheet model(Doing it yourself will increase you understanding. I let you decide foryourself).

This talk requires noadvanced mathematics beyond high school algebra (freshman calculus were used inone slide only). Thus, the hope is that the talk will be accessible to aaverage scientifically inclined public.
