6. We begin our Shanxi tour on 5/12:
Day one – visit to the huoko (壷口瀑布) narrows fall of the Yellow River. This is a bit of a disappointment compared to Niagara Falls in the US and Iguasu Falls in Brazil (two of the three most famous falls in the world)
Huoko Fall
Day two – Visit to Guangon (关帝庙) temple and Yongle temple (永乐宫)_, one of the founding sites of Taoism
Guangon temple
Wall Painting depicting the founder of Taoism at Youngle palace
Day three - Visit to the Chen (prime minister) compound 皇城相府– In the US there is Kennedy family constituting a political dynasty. What I learned is that the Chen family, particularly in the person of Chen Zhao-Tin陈绍廷, the prime minister, teacher of Empelror Kanxi康熙, and editor of the first Chinese dictionary (康熙字典), is another political dynasty flourishing some four hundred years ago. The family compound is built in grand style like a royal palace/city with city walls, watch towers, secret passages, storages, courtyards, and gardens. Although the present family now living in a nearby village no longer occupying the compound which is now a tourist site, the members are very prosperous due to their current coal mining business. Free college tuition for their children, lifetime medical care, and other benefits are available to all members.
