Tragedies in the Amazon Rain Forest
TheAmazon rain forest inBrazil is also known as “the Lung of the Earth” in that it is the largest absorber and storage of Carbon dioxide and producer of life giving oxygen. However, a tragedy of incalculable magnitude is taking place in the region currently( http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-1140818.html. ) that will have seriously consequences in climate change and human civilization as we know it. This is the problem: currently there are some 6000+ wild fires burning in this forest which is 77 % more than in 2018 total. These fires and deforestation are NOT natural disasters but due to human intervention ( and reportedly government encouragement. ) Apparently farmers want to clear more land in the forest to plant crops and to drive out indigenous tribal natives. Starting a fires is the easiest way yo accomplish this. What is not obvious to them is the long term serious consequence of such action. Burning the forest release all the carbon storage there in ( the main contributor to global warming and climate change). At the same time, deforestation reduces oxygen production which is vital for human survival. International concerns are rebuffed by the Brazilian government saying this is an internal affair and Brazilian sovergnity issue not subject to international intervention. But destroying “the lung of the earth” harm everyone living on this earth. How this tragedy will be resolved remains to be seen.
