On the occasion of the news that the H.Bode Lecture Prize of the IEEE D&C conference for 2019 was awarded to Academician Guo Lei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

THE international conference of the world for control systems and sciences is the annual  IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. I have written about it in the past http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-50878.html  . Associated with the conference, several prestigious awards and prizes are always given during the meetings. Among the awards there is the H. Bode lecture prize given to the person who is asked to deliver a plenary lecture at the conference. This is a singular honor.

For 2019, I have belatedly and happily learned that Academician Guo Lei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the recipient. The meeting will take place at Nice, France on Dec. 10-15 – an event I certainly do not wish to miss and am looking forward to it (God willing at my age)

Dr. Guo Lei is the first Chinese in China and in the world to receive this honor. As Vince Lombardi (for whom the US Superbowl award was named after– the biggest sport event of world annually. See previous blog. ) famously have said: “Being first is the only thing”. Every Chinese scientific worker in China and abroad should feel proud for academician Guo and of the rise of Chinese scientific research. Unlike many Chinese who received their training abroad in Europe or the US, Guo is totally trained and worked in China. This recognition for him by the international scientific community is very hard-earned since there are no better recognition than the evaluation of your peers. And being a colleague of Dr. Guo whom I have known for many years, I am not ashamed to admit that it is with a slight sense of envy that I send my sincere congratulations to him for this recognition and honor. Guo did this for Chinese everywhere.
