爱默生说：A man’s style is hismind’s voice. （风格反映为心声。）

17.1 语言和美学

Pensive（沉思的）来自法语pensée（思想）。

To liberate is to balance. （拙译：要想汪洋恣肆，就得张弛有度。）

布封说：Le style est l’homme même.（风格即其人。）

有人说：语言是一个民族的风格。也就是说，语言最能揭示一个民族的特质。

人们把圣人的名字与治疗某些疾病联系起来，这种情形与Nyrop所引用的以下德语儿歌诗句并无差异：

Spinne am Morgen,

Kummer und Sorgen;

Spinne am Mittag,

Glück für den dritten Tag;

Spinne am Abend,

Erquickend und Labend.

(我30年前试译如下：

晨纺线，

多忧伤；

午纺线，

好运长；

晚纺线，

乐洋洋。）

这样的诗行真的能使孩子感到真实可靠（authenticity）。

欢乐与悲伤总是结伴而行，在韵律中如此，在生活中亦如此。

Christian Morgenstern最滑稽的作品是以下这首诗歌：

Ein Wiesel

Sass auf einem Kiesel

Inmitten Bachgeriesel

Wirst ihr

Weshalb?

Das Mondcalb

Verriet es mir

im stillen:

Das reffinier—

Te tier

Tat’s um des Reimes willen.

勉强译为英语，大致如下：

A wiesel
