As the only carbon-containing renewable resource in the world, biomass derived from photosynthesis could be transformed into various high value-added liquid fuels and fine chemicals, which is of great strategic significance to mitigate the depletion of fossil fuels and growing environmental problems in the future. The efficient conversion of biomass resources and the clean production of bio-based chemicals are the commanding heights of scientific and technological development that all countries are seizing. The production of chemicals and new materials with biomass resources as raw materials is of great strategic significance to realize the substitution of fossil resources, "carbon neutralization" and sustainable green development of the industry. If the biomass can be directly converted into basic chemical raw materials in one step with the least energy consumption, it will have great value in biomass energy and material industry, which is a challenging and attractive topic.
Catalytic conversion of biomass has molecular diversity in processing and products, and its precise conversion to specific chemicals has important scientific value and strategic significance for the development of new materials derived from photosynthesis. Catalytic technology is the pivotal factor restricting the development of the biomass conversion field. Therefore, the main goal of this research topic is developing advanced catalytic materials and technologies for biomass conversion, providing deep insight into the chemical processes in bioenergy utilization, as well as sharing the advanced strategies for surface and interface engineering and their promising applications in biomass conversion and bioenergy utilization (such as lignin degradation, cellulose hydrolysis, biomass hydrodeoxygenation, furan-based chemicals, biofuels and so on).
The aim of the current Research Topic is to cover promising, recent, and novel catalytic materials and technologies in the biomass conversion field. This research topic welcomes submissions in the forms of Original Research, Review, Mini-Review and Perspective. Areas to be covered in this Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:
• Catalytic conversion of biomass into chemicals.
• Advanced catalytic materials for biomass conversion.
• Advanced catalytic technologies for biomass conversion.
• Chemical processes in bioenergy utilization.
• Furan derivatives production and application.
