   When many people think of watermelon, they likely think of Citrullus lanatus, the cultivated watermelon with sweet, juicy red fruit enjoyed around the world as a dessert. Indeed, watermelon is one of the world’s most popular fruits, second only to tomato – which many consider a vegetable. But there are six other wild species of watermelon, all of which have pale, hard, and bitter fruits.

   世界上最小的西瓜名叫“佩普基诺”(Pepquinos),也称“拇指西瓜”,只有3厘米长、直径2厘米,它是来南美洲的一种野生植物,1987年一家荷兰公司开始在美国和亚洲种植,但事实上,这货只是长得像西瓜的远亲(西瓜是葫芦科西瓜属,拇指西瓜是葫芦科番马㼎儿属 )。

图10  吉尼斯世界纪录上最大的西瓜是2013年产自美国纳西州的318斤巨无霸

   Watermelons are pretty heavy compared to the average fruit, but the heaviest watermelon ever recorded registered an incredible 350.5 lbs - comparable to the weight of three average teenagers.

   It was grown by Chris Kent in Tennessee, USA. Kent was awarded the title at the Operation Pumpkin Festival, where his record broke the previous benchmark by a hefty 82 lbs.
