How are you doing? Daddy has just settled down in a hotel in Beijing. Because of the time zone difference, it is 10:30 pm here while you might just start your Mandarin class in Thomas Middle School.
This is a long flight, taking 14 hours! Do you remember how long it took us last time from Toronto to Beijing? I thought it was shorter. Last time we took Air Canada, but this time Daddy used a Chinese airline called Hainan 海南 Airline. This is my second time flying with them. Their service was awesome; particularly it was a new aircraft. The window glass can change color with the light. So there is no need to put a shade. Sitting beside me was actually a nine-year-old boy who travelled alone. He was very independent. Although the flight attendants reminded me of taking care of him, I could tell he would be okay. And he was entertaining himself very well. Actually I learned from him that the window glass can change color with light -- like a camouflage. He also showed me how to use the entertainment system. There are lots of interesting games, kid's movies, and so on. At certain period, the boy was watching a movie or some kind of TV show -- I just peeked, but you know, I am too old to entertain those -- and he kept laughing for at least 45 minutes, while his neighbours including me were all just sleeping! I bet you could travel alone to China to see grandma (nai nai and wai po) next year!
This time I am travelling with 3 other people together. One of them is actually my university colleague, and the other two work in different governmental departments in Ontario. We are attending a conference (some kind of meeting where people share ideas) to help China build better cities. Daddy was invited to this meeting as a Canadian expert. So I am staying in a hotel called Foreign Experts Hotel. The hotel is awesome too. Very quiet, and not very far from the airport -- about 25 minutes driving, similar to the distance between our home to Toronto Pearson Airport. Every elevator is tightly security controlled. So we are very safe.
Tomorrow morning we will travel to another city Jinan. We are going to take the high-speed train. This will my first time taking the high-speed train. I was told the train is really fast, something like three hundred kilometres per hour. I'll let you know if this is true or not.
All right, this is my Day 1 journal. I'll try to send you an email everyday if the internet permits. I wish to receive your hello from home too!
Love you,
Daddy
