今天我的邮箱里收到几十封同事们发来的邮件，讨论的是同一件事，那就是萨斯卡切万大学（University of Saskatchewan)大学将一位任职多年的院长开除了。开除的原因据说是该院长与校方领导不合作并公开发表反对意见。此事，连加拿大国家电视台CBC都报道了。详细情况见http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/prof-robert-buckingham-fired-after-criticizing-saskatchewan-university-plan-1.2642637?cmp=rss

这事情之所以反响强烈，是因为校方不但把该教授的院长职位给捋了，连tenured职位也一并捋了，这下犯了众怒。

下面摘录我校政治系的一位教授，萨大校友，给该校教务长的信中的一段话：

It is one thing to fire somebody from an administrative position, and send them back to life as a lowly professor; it is quite another to fire somebody from the ranks of the tenured professoriate … particularly on grounds that remind us all of why tenure exists!  Tenure is like free speech and academic freedom: the test of our commitment to these lofty principles isn't how easily we mouth the words in the context of those with whom we agree; it is how vigorously we defend those with whom we disagree, or dislike, or whatever.
