教授是用来干什么的？

取一个跟风的标题，谈一点教学感悟。
陈龙珠教授最近博文提了一个很好的话题，中国高等教育，落后的是教材还是观念？
文后有位老看客(laokanke）留言，我深表赞同，他说：关键在于“教育理念不落后，教师不懒惰，随时更新教学内容而不是按照教材照本宣科”，“重要的是要教给学生学习的方法。”
我在几周前，在我学校的教学博客上（外网上不去），给我的学生写了一段话，现将部分抄录如下：
Last Friday I received my first guest since I took the role of Faculty mentor this semester. The student raised a very interesting question: Why should students attend lectures? After all, most of the textbook writers are more knowledgeable, if not smarter, than most of the instructors in the certain subject. If the contents covered in the lectures are also covered by the textbook, what is the point of sitting there listening to somebody bragging? To make the story short, I made a final suggestion to the visitor: If you felt the lectures are not challenging enough, challenge the instructor! If you don't want to challenge or be challenged, you won't learn.
Remember: A professor is there to stir you, not to please you.
