Practitioner’s Guide to Functional Behavioral Assessment
Process, Purpose, Planning, and Prevention
Stephanie M. Hadaway
Alan W. Brue
functional behavioral assessment is a set of techniques and strategies that are designed to ascertain relational connections between a respondent and environmental conditions, creating a comprehensive FBA entails both indirect assessment and direct assessment to form a hypothesis regarding the behavior of concern,
functional analysis it is an experimental method designed to test the accuracy of the hypothesis through the manipulation of variables.
behavior cannot be viewed in single, isolated episodes
effective behavioral interventions cannot be overgeneralized,in order for behavior planning to be successful,it must be individualized and cover both deliberate assessment and deliberate prevention, even good strategies will not work with every person, therefore, strategies must be driven by data, knowledge, and understanding,if any of those components are lacking,it weakens the strategy.
FBA is a useful tool, but it should not be considered a means to and end.多種方法結合使用
interfering of inappropriate behaivors are sometimes difficult to understand, they can bring unrest and chaos into setting, there are many strategies and curricula that are available, however, these have little effectiveness if the purpose of an individual's challenging behavior is unknown, addressing the right issue with appropriate reinforcements is essential in working towards the resolution of misbehavior.
we define an FBA as a multilayered method of determining the function or intent of a behavior,it is a systemized approach that allows the practitioner to answer the question,"what purpose does this behavior serve?"行為的功能和意圖
behaviorism focuses on external factors,it is the way people act, behave, and react that can be studied, not what they think or feel, therefore.
the behavior to be addressed in the FBA will be seen, heard,or experienced.in regard to behavior, the FBA will not focus on internal states, conditions,or moods, these cannot be seen,an FBA is a method to gather, compile, study, and subsequently alter behavior that can be seen.
what is the systematic process for developing an FBA
process
1.identify target behavior
2.identify the context in which the behaviors occur
3.collect data on the respondent(indirect and direct)
purpose
4.analyze the data
5.develop a hypothesis(functions)
what happens after the FBA is completed?
planning
6.implement an intervention plan(replacement behaviors,supports,interventions,and strategies)
7.evaluate the progress of the respondent
prevention
8.create a climate, cluture, and community where prevention is possible
9.change plan as needed
it is important to remember that a recurring problematic behavior is rarely isolated to one instance or factor
