基因组观测点是生物多样性方面新的热点之一。该思路经过前期的酝酿与发起,现在已经进入完善与推动阶段。相关信息转载于Genomic Observatories的网站(http://genomicobservatories.blogspot.com/)。

What is a Genomic Observatory?

A Genomic Observatory(GO) is a geographic site with a rich history of environmental/ecologicaldata collection and a long-term commitment to future studies. GOs are leading sites where biodiversity is digitized into its most fundamental layer forstreaming to global repositories (INSDC, GBIF, etc.) and major analytical centers (museums, government research laboratories, universities, and international organizations).

Genomic ObservatoriesVision: Our goal is to help preserve Earth's life supportsystems and promote sustainable development through a better understanding ofthe human-environment interaction. Our approach is to apply cutting-edge genomic technologies to observe the flux of genetic variation -- the Earth's"biocode" -- across human and natural ecosystems. We link these genetic data to biophysical and socioeconomic data and integrate the resultinginformation in predictive models. These models aim to map the quality anddistribution of biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides under various scenarios of future change and human activity.

Mission Statement

Ø To build a global network of premier research sites working to generate genomic biodiversity observations that are well contextualized and compliant with global data standards.

Ø To encourage a set of long-term, place-based, DNA-centric programs that quantify biotic interactions in an ecosystem and develop modelsof biodiversity to predict the quality and distribution of ecosystem services.

Ø To provide training, technical assistance, resources, andbest practice guides as a learning platform for sites and organizations wishingto carry out genomic observations, particularly new sites in developing countries (many of which have very high and/or vulnerable biodiversity)
