Deadline for applications: February 1, 2013

THE 9TH INTERNATIONAL PH.D. SCHOOL ON INNOVATION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - GLOBELICS ACADEMY, Tampere, Finland, 20 to 31 May, 2013

Please download The Call for Application from our website:

www.globelicsacademy.net or www.globelicsacademy.org

      -------------------------

1 THE AIM OF THE GLOBELICS ACADEMY

The aim of the Globelics Academy Ph.D. School is to support the training of Ph.D. students who utilize the innovation systems approach in context of emerging or developing economies in their dissertations.

The Academy brings together frontier researchers in innovation with Ph.D. students from developing countries in order to inspire and qualify their work as well as to help them to join high quality research networks in their field of research.

The Globelics Academy aims at improving students’ ability to undertake theoretically informed and policy-relevant empirical work on issues related with innovation in firms and societies, and its relationship with economic development.

The Globelics Academy originates from and is connected to the world-wide research network Globelics (www.globelics.org) bringing together scholars working on national systems of innovation.

2 THE CONTENT OF PH.D. SCHOOL

The Ph.D. training will be based on scholarly lectures and presentations from the Ph.D. students. Student presentations are expected to focus explicitly on their on-going research, its methodological challenges and contribution to the advancement of knowledge on innovation.

So far confirmed lecturers for 2013 include: Jose Cassiolato, Joanna Chataway, Edward Lorenz, Bengt-Åke Lundvall, Franco Malerba, Sunil Mani, Mammo Muchie and Jorge Niosi (see updated list from:

www.globelicsacademy.net or www.globelicsacademy.org ).

In addition, other activities including policy lectures, panel discussion and visit to relevant “sites of innovation” are part of the program.

3 THE SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS

To applicant should:

• be at least in the beginning of his/her second year as Ph.D student, • work explicitly on issues related to innovation and development, • be able to present an original paper associated with his/her doctoral work.

Selection aims to make sure that students from Africa, Asia and Latin America are represented, together with some North-American and European students. The candidates from each geographical origin with the best CVs and the most promising abstracts will be selected.

4 TRAVELING, ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

Meals and accommodation will be provided by the Local Organization.

Also travel expenses for students may be covered by the Local Organization, depending on sponsorship. Funding will be awarded selectively on the basis of applications. Students must specify in their application IF they will require funding, providing an estimate of the amount required for travel expenses. As available funds may not cover all students’ expenses, applicants ARE ENCOURAGED TO RAISE THEIR OWN FUNDING, if possible.

5 ABSTRACT, APPLICATION AND DEAD-LINE (FEBRUARY 1, 2013) Student selection will be based upon evaluation of

1) an extended abstract of four pages de-scribing the student’s research,
